{"id":988,"date":"2025-09-05T18:26:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T18:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=988"},"modified":"2025-09-05T18:26:02","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T18:26:02","slug":"uk-deputy-pm-angela-rayner-resigns-over-tax-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=988","title":{"rendered":"UK deputy PM Angela Rayner resigns over tax error"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Britain\u2019s deputy prime minister, Angela Rayner, resigned on Friday after an investigation found she breached the ministerial code by underpaying on a property tax, in a major blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u2019s embattled Labour government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rayner, a figurehead among the party\u2019s left-wing base, had earlier this week admitted not paying enough on the flat purchase and referred herself to the government\u2019s independent ethics adviser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kizz Daniel - For You ft. WizKid (Official Video)\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4f73HnCKq8Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter to Starmer, ethics chief, Laurie Magnus, wrote that Rayner had failed to \u201cheed the caution\u201d of legal advice she had received and had therefore breached the ministerial code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiven the findings, and the impact on my family, I have therefore decided to resign,\u201d Rayner wrote in a letter to Starmer, adding she would also be stepping down as housing minister and deputy leader of the Labour Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI deeply regret my decision to not seek additional specialist tax advice,\u201d Rayner said, adding she took \u201cfull responsiblity for this error\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his reply, Starmer told her he was \u201cvery sad\u201d to lose her from government, but added: \u201cYou will remain a major figure in our party\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rayner disclosed on Wednesday that she had underpayed on the so-called stamp duty on a flat in southern England following days of reports suggesting that she had saved \u00a340,000 ($53,000) by removing her name from the deeds of another property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 45-year-old has three sons, one of whom was born prematurely and is registered blind with lifelong special needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said on Wednesday that after her 2023 divorce she sold her part of the family home to the trust fund to protect it for her child\u2019s future and used the money in the flat purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She paid less of the property surcharge because she claimed it was her main home rather than a second home, but later conceded this was wrong because her son is under 18 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnus said Rayner had \u201cacted with integrity and with a dedicated and exemplary commitment to public service\u201d but concluded he considered the \u201ccode to have been breached\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rayner had often been tipped to become Labour leader one day and has been a top target for political attacks by the Conservatives and right-wing media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She left school with no qualifications after becoming pregnant aged 16, and has a straight-talking style that has proved popular with working-class voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She grew up in Stockport on the outskirts of Manchester in northwest England, living in one of the area\u2019s most deprived social housing\u00a0complexes. <a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/uk-deputy-pm-angela-rayner-resigns-over-tax-error\/\">(Punch)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Britain\u2019s deputy prime minister, Angela Rayner, resigned on Friday after an investigation found she breached the ministerial code by underpaying on a property tax, in a major blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer\u2019s embattled Labour government.
