{"id":742,"date":"2025-08-12T08:15:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T08:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=742"},"modified":"2025-08-12T01:01:53","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T01:01:53","slug":"british-backpacker-pleads-guilty-to-killing-man-while-drunk-on-e-scooter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=742","title":{"rendered":"British backpacker pleads guilty to killing man while drunk on e-scooter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A British backpacker has pleaded guilty to killing a man in Australia after hitting him while riding an e-scooter with an alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alicia Kemp, 25, from Redditch, Worcestershire, had been drinking with a friend on a Saturday afternoon in May when she was kicked out of a bar because the two of them were drunk, the court heard earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yemi Alade - Tomorrow (Official Music Video)\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G4u2yMsPdG8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair hired an e-scooter in the evening, and Kemp was driving at speeds of 20 to 25km\/h (12 to 15mph) when she hit 51-year-old Thanh Phan from behind on a pavement in Perth&#8217;s city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The father-of-two hit his head on the pavement and died in hospital from a brain bleed two days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kemp&#8217;s passenger was also hurt in the crash &#8211; sustaining a fractured skull and broken nose &#8211; but her injuries were not life-threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Perth&#8217;s Magistrates Court on Monday, Kemp &#8211; appearing via video link &#8211; pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death while intoxicated. The charge carries a maximum 20-year prison term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prosecutors dropped a second charge of dangerous driving causing bodily harm to her passenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, the court heard that Kemp&#8217;s blood alcohol content level was 0.158 after the crash, more than three times the legal limit of 0.05 in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prosecutors said CCTV footage showed Kemp&#8217;s &#8220;inexplicably dangerous&#8221; riding before she struck Mr Phan, who was waiting to cross the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement from Mr Phan&#8217;s family earlier this year, the structural engineer was described as a beloved husband, father, brother and dear friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kemp&#8217;s lawyer Michael Tudori said she was relieved after pleading guilty and hoped to be sentenced before Christmas, according to local media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You could see she was ready to say those words, you know, she&#8217;s obviously done something stupid,&#8221; Mr Tudori told the ABC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kemp, who was in Western Australia on a working holiday visa, will remain in custody until her sentencing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c0e999y7vq2o\">(BBC)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A British backpacker has pleaded guilty to killing a man in Australia after hitting him while riding an e-scooter with an alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
