{"id":3298,"date":"2026-04-29T09:22:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T09:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=3298"},"modified":"2026-04-29T01:47:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T01:47:59","slug":"fcc-orders-review-of-abc-licenses-after-jimmy-kimmels-melania-trump-joke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=3298","title":{"rendered":"FCC orders review of ABC licenses after Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s Melania Trump joke"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The US\u2019s top media watchdog announced on Tuesday that it is accelerating the review of eight local broadcasting licenses used by ABC, in a move critics see as a clear example of political and regulatory retribution against a disfavored broadcaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Communications Commission\u2019s (FCC) announcement comes after the White House launched a full-on attack against the ABC\u2019s late-night host, Jimmy Kimmel, over a joke he made last week about Melania Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Olamide, Wizkid - Kai! (Official Video)\" width=\"980\" height=\"735\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7tChMHOrQJM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, Donald Trump called for Kimmel to be fired over the segment, in which Kimmel said that the first lady has \u201ca glow like an expectant widow\u201d. The joke was made two days before an attempted shooting \u2013 allegedly targeting Trump\u2019s administration \u2013 interrupted the annual White House correspondents\u2019 dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FCC \u2013 led by Trump-appointed chair Brendan Carr \u2013 does not grant licenses to national television networks; rather, it licenses each individual station that broadcasts using the public airwaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ABC owns and operates eight stations, though it has content agreements with many more. Those eight stations \u2013 WABC-TV New York, KABC-TV Los Angeles, WLS-TV Chicago, WPVI-TV Philadelphia, KTRK-TV Houston, KGO-TV San Francisco, WTVD-TV Raleigh-Durham and KFSN-TV Fresno \u2013 are the ones being targeted by Carr\u2019s FCC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those stations were not scheduled to have to apply for renewal until 2028 at the earliest and 2031 at the latest. But now they are required to file for renewal by 28 May, years ahead of when they were originally required to do so. The FCC announcement appears connected to an investigation launched by the agency early last year into ABC parent company Disney\u2019s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpecifically, FCC rules provide that whenever the FCC regards an application for a renewal of a license as essential to the proper conduct of an investigation, the FCC has the authority to call the broadcaster\u2019s licenses in for early renewal. Doing so both allows the FCC to conduct its ongoing investigation and enables the FCC to ensure that the broadcaster has been meeting its public interest obligations more broadly,\u201d David J Brown, chief of the video division at the FCC\u2019s media bureau, wrote in a memo. \u201cThe FCC determines that calling in Disney\u2019s ABC licenses for early renewal, at this time, under the Communications Act\u2019s public interest standard is essential within the meaning of agency regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, a Disney spokesperson acknowledged that the company has received notice of the expedited renewal process. \u201cABC and its stations have a long record of operating in full compliance with FCC rules and serving their local communities with trusted news, emergency information and public\u2011interest programming,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cWe are confident that record demonstrates our continued qualifications as licensees under the Communications Act and the first amendment and are prepared to show that through the appropriate legal channels. Our focus remains, as always, on serving viewers in the local communities where our stations operate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a\u00a0conservative podcast published on Tuesday, Carr weighed in on the DEI-related investigation and said: \u201cThere\u2019s evidence that Disney has been pretty bad. There\u2019s evidence suggests that Disney literally was dividing and categorizing employees based on race and gender, and potentially \u2013 we\u2019ll see what the evidence establishes, ultimately \u2013 giving different opportunities to people based on their race or gender or other protected class. And we\u2019re going to get some more discovery from Disney on that. But that could raise character questions about the company long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carr, on the podcast, said that license renewals can be \u201caccelerated\u201d if there are \u201csignificant concerns\u201d about how a network is operating, and questions about whether it is doing so in the public interest. If the FCC determines that a broadcaster is in violation, the next step would be a hearing designation, which Carr said was a \u201cmulti-month process\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna M Gomez, the lone Democrat on the FCC, has decried any attempt to speed up the license renewal process for ABC \u2013\u00a0or any other television network that has been targeted by the Trump administration. \u201cThis is unprecedented, unlawful, and going nowhere,\u201d\u00a0she wrote in a post on X\u00a0on Tuesday. \u201cThis political stunt won\u2019t stick. Companies should challenge it head-on. The First Amendment is on their side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an\u00a0interview with the Guardian\u00a0last month, Gomez said the license renewal apparatus is intentionally onerous and time-consuming to prevent any appearance of partisan decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf they are trying to take adverse action through the license renewal process, that is an arduous, long, process with multi-layers of decisions that have to be made by different parties that are meant to protect broadcasters from capricious and arbitrary action from the commission,\u201d Gomez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tom Wheeler, who served as chair of the FCC during Barack Obama\u2019s presidency, told the Guardian on Tuesday that Carr \u201chas turned [the FCC] into a political organization using policy to achieve political goals\u201d rather than \u201ca policy agency operating in a political environment\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Wheeler said that Carr has the ability to schedule consideration of ABC\u2019s license renewals, any adverse decision would ultimately be appealable \u2013 and he noted that license denials are exceedingly rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wheeler said that a denial of ABC\u2019s licenses \u201cwould have a hard time at the courts\u201d, though he doesn\u2019t see that as the goal. \u201cThere are two message: there\u2019s a message that goes to the Maga base that says, \u2018Boy, I\u2019m going at them.\u2019 There\u2019s a message that goes to the president that says, \u2018Boy, am I carrying forth what you want me to do.\u2019 And then there\u2019s a message to every licensee of the FCC that says, \u2018I can do this to you too.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, Carr confirmed that the\u00a0FCC is also investigating\u00a0the ABC daytime talkshow The View for a potential violation of rules around providing equal time for opposing political candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite calls by Trump and his wife Melania for ABC to take action against Kimmel,\u00a0his show aired as scheduled\u00a0on Monday night. \u201cIt was a very light roast joke about the fact that he\u2019s almost 80 and she\u2019s younger than I am,\u201d Kimmel explained to viewers. \u201cIt was not \u2013 by any stretch of the definition \u2013 a call to assassination. And they know that. I\u2019ve been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence, in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, Carr reportedly pressured television station groups to pre-empt Kimmel\u2019s show as punishment for a comment that he made in the wake of the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. Two right-leaning broadcast groups, Sinclair and Nexstar,\u00a0did so, and ABC opted to \u201cindefinitely\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/sep\/18\/jimmy-kimmel-live-suspended-indefinitely-after-hosts-charlie-kirk-comments\">pull<\/a>\u00a0Kimmel\u2019s show. Kimmel ultimately returned to the air a week later.\u00a0Carr later claimed\u00a0that his comments about Kimmel\u2019s show did not amount to a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seth Stern, chief of advocacy for Freedom of the Press Foundation, issued a statement on Tuesday calling out Carr\u2019s FCC. \u201cThe FCC is neither the journalism police nor the humor police,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is nothing but illegal jawboning intended to intimidate ABC into kissing the ring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe FCC has no authority to cancel broadcasters\u2019 licenses because of their perceived political views. But this isn\u2019t just about the rights of Disney and ABC. President Trump is trying to consolidate control over what Americans see and hear on the radio, television, and social media,\u201d Jameel Jaffer, executive director at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf he gets his way, we\u2019ll have only government-aligned media organizations that broadcast only government-approved news and commentary.
