{"id":3271,"date":"2026-04-25T15:34:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T15:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=3271"},"modified":"2026-04-25T15:34:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T15:34:33","slug":"uk-and-french-governments-sign-a-3-year-deal-to-curb-migrant-crossings-in-english-channel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=3271","title":{"rendered":"UK and French governments sign a 3-year deal to curb migrant crossings in English Channel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The UK and French governments signed a new multimillion-euro deal on Thursday aimed at reducing the number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, with increased police patrols and enhanced surveillance in northern France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and French Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez formally endorsed the three-year agreement during a joint visit to the Dunkirk region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rema - Calm Down (Official Music Video)\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CQLsdm1ZYAw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahmood praised the new deal as providing \u201cthe right mix of skills and capabilities that we know will work on the beaches in order to reduce the crossings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nu\u00f1ez said that it will help in \u201ccombating illegal immigration networks, human trafficking networks, which are obviously extremely harmful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the agreement, the UK will provide 500 million pounds ($675 million) to strengthen measures in northern France, with an additional 160 million pounds ($216 million) depending on the success of new tactics to curb Channel crossings. If those efforts fail, the additional funding will be halted after one year, the UK Home Office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan aims at increasing the number of officers deployed on the ground from 907 now to 1,392 for the 2026\u20142029 period, along with the creation of an additional police unit dedicated to combating irregular migration, funded by France, the French Interior Ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will also include the deployment of new technologies aimed at reducing departures of \u201ctaxi boats,\u201d the term authorities use for small motorized vessels that are typically inflatable and used by smugglers to pick up migrants along long stretches of the northern French coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike boats that migrants carry into the water themselves, \u201ctaxi boats\u201d typically set off largely empty from secluded coastal areas and pick up migrants at prearranged meeting points on beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deal also expands surveillance capabilities through drones, helicopters and electronic monitoring, to better prevent crossing attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur work with the French has already stopped tens of thousands of crossings and this government has deported or returned nearly 60,000 people with no right to be here,\u201d UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since taking office nearly two years ago, Starmer\u2019s center-left Labour government has pushed through a series of policies that it hopes will sharply reduce immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Small boat crossings have become a potent political issue in the UK over recent years.
