{"id":2893,"date":"2026-03-10T07:47:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T07:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=2893"},"modified":"2026-03-10T03:04:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T03:04:29","slug":"disneys-robin-hood-live-action-remake-not-moving-forward-says-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=2893","title":{"rendered":"Disney\u2019s \u2018Robin Hood\u2019 live-action remake not moving forward, says Director"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Fans of\u00a0Disney\u2018s 1970s animated feature\u00a0<em>Robin Hood<\/em>\u00a0aren\u2019t likely to be feeling particularly merry after the latest update about a potential live-action remake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a recent\u00a0Reddit AMA, filmmaker Carlos L\u00f3pez Estrada said that the studio was not moving forward with his planned photorealistic musical.\u00a0<em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u00a0exclusively reported in April 2020 that Estrada was in\u00a0early development on the movie\u00a0for streaming service\u00a0Disney+\u00a0after deals were finalized prior to the industry shutting down amid the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yemi Alade - Tomorrow (Official Music Video)\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G4u2yMsPdG8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s dead, sadly,\u201d Estrada wrote in response to a question about the project\u2019s status. \u201cI say \u2018sadly\u2019 because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Blindspotting director added, \u201cI keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THR previously reported that Kari Granlund was writing the script for a feature remake that would be a hybrid of live action and CG. Granlund worked on the screenplay for Disney\u2019s 2019 version of Lady and the Tramp, which became the studio\u2019s first remake to debut on a streaming platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disney has continued to prioritize its theatrical remakes of classic animated properties. This includes a live-action take on\u00a0<em>Tangled,\u00a0<\/em>which is\u00a0back in active development\u00a0after\u00a0<em>THR<\/em>\u00a0reported last year that the film\u2019s progress had been paused in light of Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot\u2019s live-action\u00a0<em>Snow White<\/em>\u00a0underperforming at the box office. Since then, Disney has had a massive hit with the live-action remake of\u00a0<em>Lilo &amp; Stitch<\/em>, while Barry Jenkins\u2019 prequel\u00a0<em>Mufasa: The Lion King<\/em>\u00a0also had a strong showing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Director Thomas Kail\u2019s live-action remake of Moana hits theaters this summer. Additionally, the studio has been developing a live-action spinoff of Beauty and the Beast villain Gaston and a remake of Hercules from filmmaker Guy Ritchie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robin Hood hit theaters in 1973 and used animated anthropomorphic animals to tell the classic story of the heroic outlaw. Robin Hood and Maid Marian were depicted as red foxes, while Little John was a brown bear, and Prince John was a lion. The film surpassed $32 million at the domestic box office ($234 million today) and earned an Oscar nomination for the song \u201cLove.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob Iger, who is soon ending his run as Disney CEO, said during a conference call last year that the studio has focused its efforts on theatrical releases after having previously attempted to ramp up its Disney+ roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe all know that, in our zeal to flood our streaming platform with more content, that we turned to all of our creative engines, including Marvel, and had them produce a lot more,\u201d Iger said. \u201cWe\u2019ve also learned over time that quantity does not necessarily beget quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his Reddit conversation, Estrada also responded to a question about his experience co-directing Disney\u2019s 2021 animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDisney was so special and so hard,\u201d Estrada said. Noting that he was Disney Animation\u2018s first director of color, he continued, \u201cNeedless to say, I lasted only a few years there. But they were really great years. I wouldn\u2019t trade them for the world.
