{"id":2764,"date":"2026-02-25T12:29:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T12:29:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=2764"},"modified":"2026-02-25T12:29:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T12:29:46","slug":"one-battle-after-another-shines-at-2026-bafta-film-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=2764","title":{"rendered":"\u2018One Battle After Another\u2019 shines at 2026 BAFTA Film Awards\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d continued its awards season streak by winning the top prize at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) on Sunday, with the British awards also recognising homegrown talent across categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following in the footsteps of Hollywood ceremonies last month, the BAFTAs gave the best film award to the offbeat thriller \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ayra Starr - Goodbye (Warm Up) ft. Asake (Official Music Video)\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/22PZkwJpu9k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Thomas Anderson won the best director award for the political thriller, which has struck a chord with its portrayal of a deeply polarised United States \u2014 and also won the most prizes of the night with a tally of six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the title makes sense,\u201d Anderson told reporters after the ceremony. \u201cIt just does start to seem like one battle after another these days. But stay hopeful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chalamet\u2019s ping-pong drama \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d left the night with no awards \u2014 having been nominated in 11 categories \u2014 but Guillermo del Toro\u2019s \u201cFrankenstein\u201d walked off with three wins in the technical categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vampire period film \u201cSinners\u201d left the night with three awards, including for best score and best original screenplay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BAFTA ceremony, often seen as a weather vane for the Oscars in three weeks time, recognised British and Irish talent in some of the top categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loud cheers erupted in London\u2019s Southbank Centre when British actor Robert Aramayo triumphed over established stars Timothee Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio to snag the best actor honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aramayo, the underdog in the category, won for his portrayal of a man with Tourette syndrome in \u201cI Swear\u201d, inspired by the real life story of Scot John Davidson whose life was irrevocably changed by the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI honestly cannot believe I won this award. I really, really cannot,\u201d said a tearful Aramayo, who had already won in the rising star category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just really happy that \u2018I Swear\u2019 has shown a spotlight on something that is really, really misunderstood,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ireland\u2019s Jessie Buckley continued her winning streak for her heartwrenching portrayal of Shakespeare\u2019s wife Agnes in \u201cHamnet\u201d, scooping the best actress award, beating off strong competition from stars including Kate Hudson and Emma Stone<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis really does belong to the women past, present and future that have taught me and continue to teach me how to do it differently,\u201d said Buckley, who made history as the first Irish actress to win a BAFTA in the category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike France\u2019s Cesar Awards or Spain\u2019s Goya Awards, which champion national cinema, the BAFTAs are open to all nationalities. As a consequence, the awards have previously faced some criticism for the American-dominated roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year however, local talent got wide recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHamnet\u201d won outstanding British film, and Nigerian-British actress Wunmi Mosaku won best supporting actress for her role in \u201cSinners\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adapted from a novel by Maggie O\u2019Farrell, \u201cHamnet\u201d follows William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes as they navigate the loss of their son in plague-ravaged Elizabethan England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSentimental Value\u201d won in the foreign language film category, becoming the first Norwegian film to win at the BAFTAs, according to director Joachim Trier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intimate drama follows the relationship between two daughters and their estranged father, as he struggles to reconnect with them while making a film in their now hollowed-out family home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe felt ready to try to talk about family life, intergenerational trauma and all those things we don\u2019t know how to talk about,\u201d Danish-Norwegian filmmaker Trier told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hollywood and British royalty were in attendance, including BAFTA president Prince William, his wife Princess Catherine, and A-listers DiCaprio, Chalamet and Cillian Murphy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William, the eldest son of King Charles III, was the latest royal to go about business-as-usual at the end of a dramatic week that saw his uncle and ex-prince Andrew arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Prince of Wales said he was not calm \u201cat the moment\u201d when asked about whether he had watched \u201cHamnet\u201d, according to the PA news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI need to be in quite a calm state and I\u2019m not at the moment,\u201d William told Elaine Bedell, chief executive of the Southbank Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even the heir-to-the-throne smiled wide as Paddington Bear came onto the stage to present the award for best children and family film. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelstv.com\/2026\/02\/23\/one-battle-after-another-shines-at-2026-bafta-film-awards\/\">(Channels)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d continued its awards season streak by winning the top prize at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) on Sunday, with the British awards also recognising homegrown talent across categories.
