Bad Bunny\u00a0made history at the\u00a068th Grammy Awards in\u00a0Los Angeles Sunday night, becoming the first-ever artist to win the\u00a0Grammy for album of the year\u00a0for a non-English language album for his landmark\u00a0DeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their homeland, their country, to follow their dreams,\u201d Benito said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside of album of the year,\u00a0Kendrick Lamar, who was the most-nominated act coming into the evening with nine overall, went\u00a0back-to-back for record of the year\u00a0with \u201cLuther,\u201d his collaboration with SZA. The record of the year win, though, came with a bit of confusion as Cher, who\u2019d just received a Lifetime Achievement Award, began to walk off stage before announcing the category, then\u00a0announced \u201cLuther Vandross\u201d as the winner. Lamar earned five wins on the night, including for best rap album and best rap song, and he became the\u00a0most-awarded rapper in Grammy history, surpassing Jay-Z as the new record-holder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s Grammys\u00a0\u2014 the final year the show airs on CBS and the last time Trevor Noah is hosting \u2014 carried a strong political undercurrent throughout the night as many of the industry\u2019s biggest artists\u00a0called out ICE\u00a0amid the turmoil that\u2019s rocked Minneapolis in recent weeks. Many of the evening\u2019s winners either directly called out the government or voicing their support to immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SZA came backstage Sunday night after the \u201cLuther\u201d win, calling it \u201cdystopian that we\u2019re dressed up and able to celebrate accolades in the material world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople are getting snatched up and shot in the face on the street, it just feels bizarre,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Billie Eilish had one of the bigger surprises of the evening as \u201cWildflower,\u201d her hit off 2024 album Hit Me Hard and Soft, took home song of the year, winning out in a category that featured the likes of Kpop Demon Hunters smash \u201cGolden,\u201d Carpenter\u2019s \u201cManchild\u201d and Bad Bunny\u2019s \u201cDtMF,\u201d among others. During her speech, alongside her brother Finneas, Eilish said \u201cfuck ICE,\u201d further adding that \u201cno one is illegal on stolen land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the album of the year win, Bad Bunny began his acceptance speech for best m\u00fasica urbana album by saying \u201cICE out.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re not savages, we\u2019re not animals, we\u2019re not aliens, we are humans and we are Americans,\u201d he said, drawing cheers from the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Olivia Dean won out for best new artist, and during her acceptance speech, the \u201cMan I Need\u201d singer called herself \u201ca granddaughter of immigrants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m a product of bravery and I think those people deserve to be celebrated,\u201d Dean said. \u201cWe\u2019re nothing without each other.\u201d

Bad Bunny, Lamar,\u00a0Lady Gaga\u00a0and Carpenter all came into Sunday with nominations across the major three categories, and while Gaga won for pop vocal album of the year, she was left out in the general field and is still yet to win a Grammy outside of the genre categories. Carpenter, who had six nominations this evening, came away empty-handed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ros\u00e9 and Bruno Mars\u00a0opened the show\u00a0with global smash \u201cApt.,\u201d itself a historic performance\u00a0putting K-pop on music\u2019s biggest stage.\u00a0(While the song didn\u2019t win for its record of the year nomination, another K-pop tune made history as \u201cGolden\u201d became the first K-pop song to ever win a Grammy). Carpenter followed soon after Mars and Ros\u00e9 an\u00a0instant classic \u201cManchild\u201d performance\u00a0that had Carpenter playing the role of pilot running through an airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lamar started the night strong, winning the first award of the night for best rap album with\u00a0GNX,\u00a0<\/em>beating out Clipse\u2019s\u00a0Let God Sort Em Out\u00a0<\/em>and Tyler, the Creator\u2019s\u00a0Chromakopia<\/em>. All three rap albums were up for album of the year. Clipse, meanwhile, took home a Grammy during the pre-telecast for best rap performance with \u201cChains and Whips,\u201d which featured Lamar as well.
