{"id":2374,"date":"2026-01-04T09:56:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T09:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=2374"},"modified":"2026-01-03T22:03:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T22:03:24","slug":"osaka-ill-at-united-cup-in-perth-but-hopes-to-be-ok-for-the-australian-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=2374","title":{"rendered":"Osaka ill at United Cup in Perth but hopes to be OK for the Australian Open"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Four-time Grand Slam singles champion Naomi Osaka is feeling under the weather at the United Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After losing her first match for Japan against Greece&#8217;s Maria Sakkari on Friday, Osaka said she got &#8220;really sick\u201d over the Christmas holiday period and wasn\u2019t operating at 100% during the 6-4, 6-2 loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rema - AZAMAN\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z2L51xr45As?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Osaka was coughing at times during the match and appeared to lack energy. She said she likely caught an illness from her two-year-old daughter Shai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have been dealing with some health stuff, so I\u2019m kind of just happy to be out here right now,\u201d Osaka said. \u201cIt\u2019s not serious but I\u2019m not operating at the percent that I want to be operating at, which kind of sucks, because I had a really good offseason so I thought I was going to do really well here.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osaka, who advanced to the U.S. Open semifinals last year, said she thinks she&#8217;s nearly finished with the illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m at the tail end of that but still not amazing,\u201d she said. &#8220;I\u2019m just trying to get better every day. I had a cough, a runny nose, like all that nasty stuff, so hopefully it goes away before the Australian Open.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Grand Slam event of the year starts in Melbourne on Jan. 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stefanos Tsitsipas wrapped up victory in the match for Greece over Japan with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Shintaro Mochizuki. <a href=\"https:\/\/japantoday.com\/category\/sports\/osaka-ill-at-united-cup-in-perth-but-hopes-to-be-ok-for-the-australian-open\">(JapanToday)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four-time Grand Slam singles champion Naomi Osaka is feeling under the weather at the United Cup.
