{"id":2112,"date":"2025-12-16T20:58:51","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T20:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=2112"},"modified":"2025-12-16T20:58:53","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T20:58:53","slug":"disney-accuses-google-of-using-ai-to-engage-in-copyright-infringement-on-massive-scale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=2112","title":{"rendered":"Disney accuses Google of using AI to engage in copyright infringement on \u2018massive scale\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As\u00a0Disney\u00a0has\u00a0gone into business with OpenAI, the Mouse House is accusing\u00a0Google\u00a0of copyright infringement on a \u201cmassive scale\u201d using AI models and services to \u201ccommercially exploit and distribute\u201d infringing images and videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday evening, attorneys for Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google, demanding that Google stop the alleged infringement in its AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Asake - Lonely At The Top (Official Video)\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bbVZo4Yw7pI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGoogle is infringing Disney\u2019s copyrights on a massive scale, by copying a large corpus of Disney\u2019s copyrighted works without authorization to train and develop generative artificial intelligence (\u2018AI\u2019) models and services, and by using AI models and services to commercially exploit and distribute copies of its protected works to consumers in violation of Disney\u2019s copyrights,\u201d reads the letter to Google\u2019s general counsel from law firm Jenner &amp; Block on behalf of Disney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter continued, \u201cGoogle operates as a virtual vending machine, capable of reproducing, rendering, and distributing copies of Disney\u2019s valuable library of copyrighted characters and other works on a mass scale. And compounding Google\u2019s blatant infringement, many of the infringing images generated by Google\u2019s AI Services are branded with Google\u2019s Gemini logo, falsely implying that Google\u2019s exploitation of Disney\u2019s intellectual property is authorized and endorsed by Disney.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the letter, which\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>\u00a0has reviewed, Disney alleges that Google\u2019s AI systems and services infringe Disney characters including those from \u201cFrozen,\u201d \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d \u201cMoana,\u201d \u201cThe Little Mermaid,\u201d \u201cDeadpool,\u201d \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy,\u201d \u201cToy Story,\u201d \u201cBrave,\u201d \u201cRatatouille,\u201d \u201cMonsters Inc.,\u201d \u201cLilo &amp; Stich,\u201d \u201cInside Out\u201d and franchises such as Star Wars, the Simpsons, and Marvel\u2019s Avengers and Spider-Man. In its letter, Disney included examples of images it claims were generated by text prompts in Google\u2019s AI apps, including of Darth Vader<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The allegations against Google follows cease-and-desist letters that Disney sent earlier to Meta and\u00a0Character.AI, as well as litigation Disney filed together with NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Discovery against\u00a0AI companies Midjourney\u00a0and\u00a0Minimax alleging copyright infringement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked for comment, a Google spokesperson said, \u201cWe have a longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship with Disney, and will continue to engage with them. More generally, we use public data from the open web to build our AI and have built additional innovative copyright controls like Google-extended and Content ID for YouTube, which give sites and copyright holders control over their content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Disney, the company has been raising its concerns with Google for months \u2014 but says Google hasn\u2019t done anything in response, and that i anything, Google\u2019s infringement has only increased during that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob Iger, Disney\u2019s CEO, in an\u00a0interview with CNBC\u00a0Thursday, said, \u201cWell, we\u2019ve been aggressive at protecting our IP, and we\u2019ve gone after other companies that have not honored our IP, not respected our IP, not valued it. And this is another example of us doing just that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iger said Disney had been in discussions with Google \u201cbasically expressing our concerns\u201d about its AI systems\u2019 alleged infringement. \u201cAnd ultimately, because we didn\u2019t really make any progress, the conversations didn\u2019t bear fruit, we felt we had no choice but to send them a cease-and-desist [letter].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disney\u2019s letter to Google demands that Google \u201cimmediately cease further copying, publicly displaying, publicly performing, distributing, and creating derivative works of Disney\u2019s copyrighted characters\u201d in \u201coutputs of Google\u2019s AI Services, including through YouTube\u2019s mobile app, YouTube Shorts and YouTube.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/digital\/news\/disney-google-ai-copyright-infringement-cease-and-desist-letter-1236606429\/\">(Variety)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As\u00a0Disney\u00a0has\u00a0gone into business with OpenAI, the Mouse House is accusing\u00a0Google\u00a0of copyright infringement on a \u201cmassive scale\u201d using AI models and services to \u201ccommercially exploit and distribute\u201d infringing images and videos.
