It also includes two acclaimed films made by celebrities about their famous parents, HBO\u2019s\u00a0<em>My Mom Jayne<\/em>\u00a0and Apple\u2019s\u00a0<em>Stiller &amp; Meara: Nothing Is Lost<\/em>, which were directed by\u00a0Mariska Hargitay\u00a0and\u00a0Ben Stiller, respectively. And there are several titles related to recent turmoil in the Middle East, including Hemdale\/Metallux\u2019s\u00a0<em>Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets<\/em>\u00a0and the self-distributed\u00a0<em>Coexistence, My Ass!<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Holding Liat<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s list of eligible documentary features includes titles that have dominated at the doc community\u2019s precursor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/awards\/\">awards<\/a>, including Netflix\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Perfect Neighbor<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Apocalypse in the Tropics<\/em>, Apple\u2019s\u00a0<em>Come See Me in the Good Light<\/em>\u00a0and Neon\u2019s\u00a0<em>Orwell: 2+2=5<\/em>. And there are several titles related to recent turmoil in the Middle East, including Hemdale\/Metallux\u2019s\u00a0<em>Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets<\/em>\u00a0and the self-distributed\u00a0<em>Coexistence, My Ass!<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Holding Liat<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most glaring omission from the list:&nbsp;<em>The Eyes of Ghana<\/em>, a documentary directed by the two-time Oscar-winning documentarian&nbsp;<strong>Ben Proudfoot<\/strong>, which is still seeking distribution.&nbsp;<em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>&nbsp;has confirmed that a late decision was made to hold the film for next awards season. Other high-profile docs that were expected to be on the list but are not, either because they were not submitted or because they failed to meet the eligibility requirements, include A24\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Marc by Sofia<\/em>, Oscar winner&nbsp;<strong>Sofia Coppola<\/strong>\u2019s portrait of&nbsp;<strong>Marc Jacobs<\/strong>, and Oscar winner&nbsp;<strong>Questlove<\/strong>\u2019s Hulu film&nbsp;<em>Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The list of eligible international features includes five widely lauded films that are being distributed in the U.S. by&nbsp;<em>Parasite<\/em>&nbsp;backer Neon and could conceivably all earn nominations: Norway\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Sentimental Value<\/em>,&nbsp;Brazil\u2019s&nbsp;<em>The Secret Agent<\/em>, South Korea\u2019s&nbsp;<em>No Other Choice<\/em>, Spain\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Sir\u0101t<\/em>&nbsp;and France\u2019s&nbsp;<em>It Was Just an Accident<\/em>.&nbsp;<em>It Was Just an Accident<\/em>, which won the Cannes Film Festival\u2019s Palme d\u2019Or, was directed by&nbsp;<strong>Jafar Panahi<\/strong>, a filmmaker from Iran but does not reflect well on the country; as a result, Iran submitted the much lower-profile&nbsp;<em>Cause of Death: Unknown<\/em>, while France submitted&nbsp;<em>It Was Just an Accident<\/em>, on the basis that much of the film\u2019s financing was French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other countries that made interesting submissions include Japan (GKIDS\u2019\u00a0<em>Kokuho<\/em>, a film about Kabuki performers, which is now the highest-grossing non-animated film in that country\u2019s history); Iraq (Sony Classics\u2019\u00a0<em>The President\u2019s Cake<\/em>\u00a0won two prizes at Cannes); Belgium (Music Box\u2019s\u00a0<em>Young Mothers<\/em>\u00a0could bring the brothers\u00a0<strong>Jean-Pierre Dardenne<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Luc Dardenne<\/strong>\u00a0the first Oscar noms of their distinguished careers); and Taiwan (Netflix\u2019s\u00a0<em>Left-Handed Girl<\/em>, which was co-written by\u00a0<em>Anora<\/em>\u00a0Oscar winner\u00a0<strong>Sean Baker<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, at least three countries submitted acclaimed documentaries for best international feature consideration: Ukraine (PBS\u2019\u00a0<em>2000 Meters to Andriivka<\/em>, a doc about a Ukrainian platoon\u2019s fight to retake a city from Russian invaders, which was directed by\u00a0<strong>Mstyslav Chernov<\/strong>, who won the best doc feature Oscar two years ago); North Macdeonia (Nat Geo\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Tale of Silyan<\/em>, from\u00a0<strong>Tamara Kotevska<\/strong>, whose 2019 film\u00a0<em>Honeyland<\/em>\u00a0was nominated for best international feature and doc feature\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/oscars\/\">Oscars<\/a>); and Denmark (<em>Mr. Nobody Against<\/em>, a film about\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>\u2019s propaganda efforts, which is still seeking U.S. distribution).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the list of animated features includes giant blockbusters like Crunchyroll\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle<\/em>, which is now the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time and the highest-grossing international film in the U.S. of all time, as well as the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2025; streaming hits like Netflix\u2019s&nbsp;<em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>, which is now that streamer\u2019s most watched film ever; acclaimed indies like Neon\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Arco<\/em>, a French-language critics\u2019 darling that counts&nbsp;<strong>Natalie Portman<\/strong>&nbsp;among its producers; and highly-anticipated forthcoming titles like Disney\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Zootopia 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the animated films that were expected to contend but are not on the list of eligible titles, either because they were not submitted or because they failed to meet the eligibility requirements, are A24\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Ne Zha 2<\/em>, Sony\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Paddington in Peru<\/em>&nbsp;and Paramount\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Smurfs<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The documentary feature and international feature categories are winnowed down to shortlists before nominations, while the animated feature category goes straight to nominations. Shortlist voting will span Dec. 8-12, 2025, and the announcement of the shortlists will come on Dec. 16.
