{"id":1743,"date":"2025-11-17T14:19:24","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T14:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=1743"},"modified":"2025-11-17T14:19:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T14:19:25","slug":"tom-cruise-receives-honorary-oscar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tona.today\/?p=1743","title":{"rendered":"Tom Cruise receives honorary Oscar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tom Cruise accepted an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night, delivering an emotional speech about his lifelong passion for filmmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Academy Honorary Award was presented by Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, who is directing Cruise in an unnamed film slated for release next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yemi Alade - Tomorrow (Official Music Video)\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G4u2yMsPdG8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The four-time Oscar-nominated actor described filmmaking as not just a job, but &#8220;who I am&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It takes me around the world,&#8221; Cruise told the audience in the Ray Dolby Ballroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me, also, our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And no matter where we come from, in that theatre, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form. And that is why it matters; that is why it matters to me. So, making films is not what I do; it is who I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Mission: Impossible<\/em>\u00a0star was honoured alongside singer Dolly Parton, choreographer Debbie Allen, and D<em>o the Right Thing<\/em>\u00a0production designer Wynn Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, many recipients of the prize have not yet won a competitive Academy Award themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cruise has been nominated twice for Best Actor in&nbsp;<em>Born on the Fourth of July<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Jerry Maguire<\/em>, once for Supporting Actor in&nbsp;<em>Magnolia<\/em>, and once as a producer for Best Picture with&nbsp;<em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He told the crowd his love for cinema began at a young age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My love for cinema began at a very early age, as early as I can remember,&#8221; Cruise said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was just a little kid in a darkened theatre, and I remember that beam of light just cut across the room, and I remember looking up, and it seemed to be just exploding on the screen. Suddenly, the world was so much larger than the one that I knew.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dolly Parton was recognised with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her decades-long charitable endeavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parton, who could not attend due to health concerns, sent her thanks via video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Cruise&#8217;s award was announced in June, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Janet Yang hailed Cruise&#8217;s &#8220;incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This year&#8217;s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oscar nominations will be announced on 22 January 2026.
