But the unexpected success of \u201cDemon Slayer: Infinity Castle\u201d has forced the industry to rethink the potential of Japanese animation to draw big audiences to theaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInfinity Castle,\u201d distributed by Sony-owned Crunchyroll, fell 76% from its opening weekend, but still finished No. 1 at the box office, raking in $17.3 million Friday through Sunday and bringing its total earnings to $104.73 million after nine days in US theaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rema - Baby (Is it a Crime) [Official Video]\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MsZhYgo9MoA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An anime film vastly outperforming expectations has been a long time coming. There have<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>been more than 100 anime movies released since 2000, yet none have reached $50 million at the domestic box office. A poll released in January 2024 from\u00a0Vox Media and Polygon showed\u00a0that 42% of Gen Z say they watch anime weekly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of \u201cInfinity Castle,\u201d it has helped that the latest installment from the popular \u201cDemon Slayer\u201d franchise has drawn acclaim from critics, receiving a 98% approval\u00a0rating on Rotten Tomatoes\u00a0and a 69\u00a0rating on Metacritic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think studio heads and movie theaters should be very happy that, if this becomes a trend rather than an anomaly, it will add another category of film to the quiver of potential content to put on the big screen,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sustained attention \u201cInfinity Castle\u201d has received from Gen Z and Gen Alpha has been a key driver for not just the movie but for the anime genre, and provided Sony and Crunchyroll with the surprise hit of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dergarabedian said it\u2019s \u201csomewhat unprecedented\u201d for an international anime movie to perform so well domestically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of analytics firm Box Office Theory, said the movie\u2019s buzz coming from younger moviegoers \u201ccan be a double-edged sword\u201d because the interest can die off quickly or it can gain momentum by adding new audiences, reminiscent of the expectation-shattering run that Warner Bros. Pictures\u2019 \u201cA Minecraft Movie\u201d had this year when it pulled in $162.75 million in its\u00a0opening weekend, and finished with $424 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0record-breaking opening weekend\u00a0of \u201cInfinity Castle\u201d may have broadened the realm of anime to US moviegoers who otherwise wouldn\u2019t have considered watching a \u201cDemon Slayer\u201d movie,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>said Robbins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat can really inspire people to go and check out something that they might not have heard of otherwise,\u201d Robbins said, adding that the movie brought out \u201cvirtually all corners of the anime world,\u201d including viewers with a passing interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, \u201cInfinity Castle\u201d became the highest-earning anime movie domestically, surpassing another record previously held by Warner Bros. 1999 hit, \u201cPok\u00e9mon: The First Movie \u2014 Mewtwo Strikes Back\u201d ($85 million). <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/21\/business\/demon-slayer-infinity-castle-anime-box-office\">(CNN)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hollywood has long viewed anime as a modest but steady genre at the domestic box office.
